Question About My DSL

Okay, so I've got my DSL going, today is the first day I've had it, and so far I'm loving it. There is one problem though, everytime I reboot my computer, it does not recognize that I am connected through the DSL.

I get a message from the SBC connection manager that says that I'm not connected and I need to check it out. So far all I have to do is just hit the 'retry' button in the connection manager, but this is annoying, especially since it's supposed to be constantly connected (I do know that there are downtimes occasionally).

Any suggestions?

TIA

By the way, the modem they gave me is the SpeedStream 5100, and I'm using the on-board LAN, I don't know if this helps any.

It sounds like what U are saying is that U have SBC connection software in your startup folder so that whenever windows boots up SBC connection manager starts and attempts to connect also, but it is always failing on that initial attempt at bootup, and U have to reconnect. If I am correct as far as that goes then I would say to look at 1 of 2 things. Is there a setting to automatically retry to connect if it fails then I would set that to retry. If not, I would take it out of my startup folder and just let windows boot up on its own and manually start the SBC software myself and connect that way. I suspect windows is still in some part of the boot process specifically concerning the LAN port and is conflicting with the SBC software as it is trying to connect but windows is not really ready to let it have control of the lan connection yet, and I suspect that is why all U have to do is retry and it works cause by then windows is done and the LAN port is fully initialized and windows is now ready to let your SBC software have control of the LAN connection...

Diabling the Connection Manager on startup (through MSCONFIG) seems to have done it. I just waited a bit after the start up, opened up my browser, and boom, I was connected.

Thanks KT. It sure is good to have telco techs floating around here .

That sounds good andy, It must have connect on demand setting so it probably is even better this way cause if U ever need to you can go back to manually typing in the password if for some reason you don't always want the connection automatically connecting ...

Well, just when I thought I'd gotten everything solved, with your help of course KT, another problem rears its ugly head.

I have the administrator account on my build, but my brotherand sister also have limited user accounts as well (XP Home). My brother tried to get on to the net on this computer (I have not yet gotten a router to run the DSL to the other computer) and could not connect, and when I tried to connect, it said that only administrators can use the Connection Manager, the problem is that I wasn't trying to use that application.

Any ideas?

It is trying to use the connection manager when you try to connect, anyways there is somewhere in XP where you have to enable permission for the connection manager to be used by a limited user. I can not remember right offhand where to get at those settings, and I have XP pro which is a little bit different in the users department... Try windows help though if U do not get a post from someone else who knows exactly how to do it...

Well it turned out that what I needed to do was to go into network settings, choose my DSL connection and enable Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), once I did this, keeping the previous change, I was able to get a successful login from all of the XP accounts.

Thank you very much for your help and your time KT. I really appreciate it.
