IE Probs

Friend's new build:

Internet Explorer shows "Page cannot be displayed" when attempting to login to a forum, email, in fact no login pages work. All security settings are at their lowest settings, cookies are enabled and there is no firewall installed

Also, ICQ doesn't work - tries to connect yet all names stay red (appears to be connected). MSN Messenger also doesn't work, most of the time he can't send messages to people but does receive all messages sent to him.

This is on 56K DIALUP so isn't a problem with closed ports or whatever on a router.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jim

Could be a bad DNS server IP.

Did the person change any service settings? Is the XP firewall running - any other firewall? What are the networking components for the dial-up connection - try using the bare minimum components - Client for MS networks and TCP/IP.
Doesnt hurt to flush the dns cache and reboot (RUN > cmd > ipconfig /flushdns ).

Addendum
And the basic questions - is the person acquiring an IP address (hopefully the setting is to acquire IP addresses automatically).
Is it possible to ping external IPs?

No XP firewall running. Networking components were just TCPIP and C4MSN anyway

Anyway, yes it was possible to ping external IPs

Problem solved with another format ! (His idea )
