Boom Modem defaulting to com 3

5634BTS 56K Video Ready Modem ( Texas Instruments )

Windows 98

Recognizes and loads the driver for the modem, but the modem defaults to com 3.

What is happening, is it will either (a) not open the port or (b) dial out a few times with no answer and then attempt again to dial and the message comes up that windows cannot communicate with the modem, it is either turned off or not installed correctly.

This is my friends computer and I have been fighting with it for a good 12 hours or more already, and am ready to snap!

I understand that there may be a conflict with the mouse on com 3, but I can't get the modem onto com 1 or 2.

Ran the troubleshooter and it told me to load the standard or hayes drivers, but they wouldn't work either.

Thanks!

Clover

Clover,

I have a 56k modem and it is installed in Com 3 and I haven't had any trouble with it conflicting with anything. But I also have DSL, and I still have the modem in the slot and the drivers are still installed. And I still don't have any trouble with conflicts. Mine wanted to default to Com 1, so I had to install it again, and it showed up on Com 1 and 3. I deleted the Com 1 install and there was not a problem with it. You should be ok as you shouldn't have any conflicts either.

I see I posted this in the wrong forum. Thanks for your reply.

I am truly baffled by this.

Is this an ISA or PCI modem? Hardware or winmodem?

Getting modems to work with Win98 could get kinda tricky. Do you know what IRQ the modem is on? Have you gone into BIOS to disable the serial ports (if they're not needed)?

reboot would be the best person to help you with this modem problem...but if he doesn't show up, check out his modem page to see if you can find anything there to help you.

I can't help you with drivers, but can help with getting it to work
First, boot to safe mode, then go into the device mangler, and remove all com ports and modems.
Restart, go into BIOS setup.
Disable com 2.
Set "PnP OS.." to NO
Set "Reset configuration data" to YES.
Restart, let things install.
Restart the computer between each step.
