Unable to connect to internet
So I made a change to the workgroup of another pc in my place to get them on the same workgroup.
I forgot what the name was previous to the change. Both PC's are now on the same workgroup on my DSL. How do I make the changes to get the other computer back on? It carries the specs in my signature. I ran through NETWORK ID but still can't get back on. I tried other network interfaces, so it's not the card. |

The workgroup name shouldn't affect internet access. As long as the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers are set right the PC should be able to get to the internet. Workgroup has to do with your internal LAN, and is a way to section off different groups of PC's from accessing each other. Did you do an ipconfig from the command prompt to see what the IP settings are currently?? I'm actually a little confused as to your actual problem, but here is what I think you are saying>> You changed 1 PC's workgroup name that was able to access the internet before the change and since changing it, you can not access the internet from this PC???
PS: Right under Network ID is the box you want that is called change, to change the name and or workgroup name of the PC...

Yes that is what I am saying.
The only difference between the two pc's is I have no default gateway in the affected pc. And and the Subnet Mask has no numbers in the 3rd slot. 255.255.0.0 vs 255.255.255.0 Is something is up with my DNS? Thanks for the idea's. I changed some settings, it hasn't worked so I toggled the settings back. Anymore idea's? PS> it also says 'autoconfiguration IP address' in the affected pc. Compared to 'IP address' in the working PC. What is that due to? Why is it autoconfiguring? |

It looks like your set to automatically obtain IP address on that affected PC but are not getting a valid one. You may have to set it back statically, because when you changed the workgroup name it sounds like it set itself back to automatically obtain, or somehow it got changed back to automatically obtain an IP address.. How are you sharing that DSL connection??

Through a netgear FSs105 Switch. I seen this autoconfig for an IP address before. But I forget how to solve it or how it was solved.
So what would be a common way to get away from the OS autoconfiguring a NIC? How do I manually get it away from this? |

You go into network connections and right click on LocalAreaConnection, then properties, then TCP/IP, then properties, and you'll have to statically assign the IP, subnet, default gateway, and DNS servers. When you typed ipconfig on the other PC, under your network adapter you should have seen those except for the DNS. Question here is how are you sharing the connection though. It usually takes a DSL sharing router, or having to pay for multiple IP addresses from your ISP, or perhaps that is your problem is that you are trying to share this connection but if the other PC is on, and you do not have a router, or pay for multiple IP addresses then you can not have them both share that DSL connection just thru an ethernet switch..

There is nothing under my Network connections (do you mean 'network and dial up connections'? if so there is no items). I am also logged on as administrator.
I am familiar with assigning IP addresses as I do that at work But both of the pc's I use at home do not show anything under network connections. I tried creating a new network connection before. It gave me options for 'dial up to the internet' and 'accept incoming connections' the rest is greyed out. -- Both PC's had access to the interent for about 2 months until I changed the workgroup yesterday. That's where I could not get it back on after reversing. Toggling the DNS service under services.msc has no effect. Last edited by Smidget; 02-21-2004 at 07:32 PM. |

If U have a good working NIC card in this PC in question, than there has to be a local area network connection. Try going thru the control panel and then network connections that way you should find that local area network connection and get to the properties for it. Could you be a little more specific how U are sharing that DSL connection to the 2 PCs, and are you using your ISP's connection software??

Ok. I switched NIC's with one I borrowed from a friend. Now the network connection icon is there.
I tried accessing it without assigning a static IP and still no go. I then tried a static IP that is one above my other PC. What should the DNS settings be? similiar to my IP address with .1 or .2 at the end? Would I have to talk to my ISP for a static IP? Or just trial and error? This is connected through a Netgear switch\router and a Westell WireSpeed etherlink hub? Then a AON(?) network adaptor. |

I looked up that model netgear device you listed and it is just an ethernet switch, so as stated before unless you are paying for 2 iP adresses from your ISP, you can not have both on at the same time because the second one will not be able to get a valid IP address. If you indeed have a router then you should just be able to leave automatically obtain IP address alone and both PC's should work. Can U post back here what you get when you do an ipconfig on the working PC?? If its win9x, then use the run box and type winipcfg. I would probably be able to have a better feel as to exactly what is going on if I saw how the other working PC is set up..
