Pissed Help! Java has hijacked my browers.

Made the mistake of installing Sun's Java plugin while I was fiddling around with geocities webbuilder. Before that, both my browers (IE6 and MozillaFirebird) were working fine. Now the Java plugin actually seems to have made things worse! Slower page load times, screwed up page graphics, odd page open sizes. They're acting like Java isn't installed at all. Tried uninstalling/reinstalling browers/Java, system restore, disabling/reenabling Java. Is there any way to get rid of this bloody plugin and get my old settings back?
