128bit AAC,

apparently comparable to 160bit MP3, and thats from the inventor of both formats so I guess he should know. AAC is the audio layer of Mpeg4 so it's a high quality for a compressed format. In "listening" tests, the "experts" say itunes AAC is the best encoder today, not sure how much credibility thise "experts" have though.

The songs you buy from the itunes music store are AAC only, the itunes app itself can encode AAC, AIFF, WAV in addition to MP3 in fixed and variable bitrates.
