Windows Update Not Working??

I haven't been able to any Windows Updates, either thru the Update site, or thru the Downloads site in my last 6 tries over about a week and 1/2 !?!?!?

Each time I try, I just lock up. Again, I just tried to update to DX 9.0b and nothing....

Anybody else having troubles?

Well, something's up with my system then. After the sucessful attempts above, I just tried again. Again, the same results: I lock up and have to hit the resent button.

It starts, gets to the download are, then it just hangs. No internet activity at all...

Any ideas? I just earlier downloaded a bunch of other updates for different programs, about 100 MB's worth, with no problem. Just at MS's site....

the wrong date and time can cause problems with the update if it is too far off.
I would also run an AV check, and check for spyware.

a week or two ago my pc kept auto-downloading and installing the same windows media security update for about 5 days in a row, if that has any relevance.

Didn't think of the date-thing, but it's set OK.

One of my other D/Ls was an AV def update, everything is good there, and I ran SpyBot SD and I'm good there, too.

Heck, I can't even D/L anything from MS's site, including security updates, and I'm down by 10!...

Maybe I'll turn of ZA Pro and see if that makes a diff..

Keep the ideas coming!

Well.... I think I found the problem... I turned off ZA and when it went for the D/L, I got a new window stating that I have to first install the New Version of Windows Messenger. And I have that turned off in ZA.

I'll enable it and give it a try...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
NO Joy!
I have the new WM installed, and it has full access. There is some difference in trying to install DirectX 9.0b (my test) as I can get some movement on the progress bar and it goes to about "3 minutes left" and then just stops! Still.
Help!
Ya, something's boogered, alright! I'm getting new broadband service sometime this week (hopefully) so I think I'll wait until then so I can eliminate the possibility of it being my current setup....
Hopefully things will be OK then....
It's one of those weird things, as everything else is working. I've not had any problems downloading drivers / updates for my sound card, vid card, AV, and a variety of other software.
If things don't change after I get updated, I'll try your suggestion, gsrat
Wish me Luck
Got the update CD coming, gsrat - don't know if it will fix the problem, though..
Thanks for the link, Cheryl. but I can get into the Windows Update Web site. It will go thru the motions and find what needs updated. It's just that when I try to do the actual updates, I lock up. I experience this only at their site and can download from any other site.
Happened to me once. Try this:
The error may occur because the language-setting in Internet Explorer is missing. To add a language, in Internet Explorer, select Tools-->Internet Options, and click the "Languages" button. Add a language to the list if empty.
English should be listed - if not add it and retry the updates.
We are having the same problem with Windows Update. Had to reformat and reinstall everything a couple of weeks ago and haven't been able to update Windows since. Have downloaded other drivers and software without a problem, but the Windows Update freezes the computer during the scan at 66%. We, too, have ordered the Windows Update CD but we already have SP1 on our installation CD so don't know if this new CD is going to be much help.
None of the solutions listed here have been of help, so . . . any other ideas?
Sorry for the delay in getting back. I upgraded from 640K to 1.5MB service, and they managed to turn me off instead!! Been offline for two weeks now! Just got back online last night so I haven't tried anything on my new connection yet...
I'll post back when I give it a go (long day and I'm hitting the proverbial hay in a few moments )
