FIANLLY got my dsl

Got dsl installed today-- I'm in heaven!!! But the tech did things so quickly, I couldn't figure out a few things that I'd like to know so I can set up my router.

First, it appears that Northpoint and MSN have'conspired' to make things so that I am stuck with their modem. No problem as far as I'm concerned because it does not use PPPoE. But I'd like to know if I have a static IP or not -- I thought I saw him enter some IP addys -- how can I find this out? As apart of the agreement with MSN, I am not allowed to have the password to the dsl modem which peaves me off to no end -- I was told, "once it's set, it's set and if you don't like this, we'll have hte technician pack it up and send it back -- nice customer service. So can I ping myself? Is there any other way to tell if this is a static IP or not?

All you should have to do is right click on the Network Neighbourhood icon, then select the properties for TCP/IP, take these settings and load them into your router, then set your TCP/IP settings to automatically obtain an IP and enable DHCP.

Is it a router or a modem? If you need software to connect it's just a modem.

What make/model is it?

What's your IP address when you're online, is it an internal address or one from your ISP's pool (run route print in DOS window to find out, the address that appears several times under the interface column)?

Run either one of these commands and tell us what you get.

If you have Win 9x or Win ME,
RUN "winipcfg" from the run command.

If you have Win2k or Win NT,

RUN "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt.

Hal-- tried that. Copied everything verbatim from networking TCP/IP NIC properties to the Linksys router. I then returned the TCP/IP NIC properties to waht the Linksys manual says they would be. Rebooted-- nothing. One thing I noticed was that MSN requires a host/domain name and the Linksys router miffs it up when I enter it. It should be "msn dsl" but when I enter it into the router and hit apply, It changes to "msn+dsl". Also, taking the advice of mcse007, using winipcfg It shows the host as CRAIG'S.northpoint (CRAIG'S is the network name of my computer). When I re-apply everything to the TCP/IP NIC settings, winipcfg shows the host/domain correctly as msn dsl.northpoint. One other difference I noticed with winipcfg was that using TCP/IP NIC settings, NetBIOS Resolution Using DNS is checked. Using the router, it's not. I set all the DNS numbers correctly so I don't know if that means anything.

Xayd-- The dslmodem is a router. It requires no PPPoE or other software. The IP listed is 192.168.1.1 but-- it is a static IP (obviously NOT 192.168.1.1). I sent myself some e-mail and checked the headers. I then restarted the 'puter and did the same thing. Same IP addy. SO I know it's static and I do remember when the tech set up the dsl modem that he wrote down the same numbers when he was finished.

-Carl-- Yes it is. And the best part for me is, using Netscape many pop-ups don't pop up. Go figure.

I'm going to e-mail MSN. I've called their tech support number-- what a f'n joke. I explained to this lady three times wha I'm trying to accomplish and the best she could say was that she didn't think two computers could be hooked up to run together. Daohhhhhhhh!

How's it goin'...I have DSL...is it not the cat's ass baby.

My ISP takes my NICs internal address (it is a must) and specifically uses this...if I change NICs...I can't get connection.

this is pretty smart, when you think about it. They obviously are and have been ready for this for a while.

So far they have been nice enough (or I've gotten the techs on a GOOD day) and I have 3 NICs registered...I use these to upgrade and connect with my other comps

(obviously) even hooking up through a hub doesn't change things...you'll have to go through the one comp or (this I'm have no idea about, but someone else may) you could give them the internal id for your router...if they have one. Something I've been thinking of...but...I can't afford(haven't made it a priority) a router yet.

Just a thought.

Damn Microsoft to Hell, that sucks Craig.

On a lighter note, though, I'm sure someone has managed to crack into their router and get the info needed for setting up an MSN connection, unless they've actually modified the router in some way.

198.162.xxx.xxx is a pool reserved for internal use, of course, so that's not the IP you have from MSN.

I'll dig around and see what I can turn up on MSN's settings, and if there's a way to get that router password to reset itself. Many routers have a reset switch that sets the password to something such as the device's serial number, in case the admin password is lost, for instance.

What brand is the router?

In the meantime, if you have a hub, go ahead and try to network your other machine to it. Here's the setup...

phone jack-----Router-----uplink port on hub------computer, computer, computer (any of the other ports on the hub should work for client machines).

If you're lucky, MSN may be stupid enough to leave DHCP services enabled in the router by default, so you may not have to do anything to share the connection. Only problem is you won't be able to specify a static IP for the second computer and you won't be able to forward certain ports to it for hosting things on it.

Ok, found a few links specific to setting up other routers for use with MSN, and also a couple of people who have this elusive router admin password that I'm sure would be happy to email to you.

You can telnet into it, or apparently Arescom has some software you can configure it with here...

Your IP isn't likely static, it looks like MSN uses PPPoA instead of PPPoE, though.

Welcome guys, give the credit to the folks at DSL Reports. I'm still learning about the "ins and outs" of DSL myself, but there's a wealth of info at the DSL Reports forums. Many phone and field techs for these ISPs hang around in there.

Hell, those of us who post there from SWBell's network have skipped the phone support altogether since there are now three techs from SBC/ASI posting regularly on the forums at DSL Reports. We just private message them directly, skipping over the middle man .
