My son had a problem at school where a program had hijacked his search bar-he kept getting redirected to a site. Now he can't get online at all. Running Win98 se. Can he uninstall and reinstall ie6.0?

Download and install Ad-aware first and see if it removes the search software.

he can but dout that would get rid of the hijacker
hijackers can be caused by a bunch of different things

you said a program hijacked his browser
was it a program he downloaded
or did it just happen when he was just browsing

Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED

Please do this. Click here: http://www.sherrylynn.us/HijackThis.exe to download Hijack This. Save it to it’s own folder (not temporary files or the desktop).
Close all open windows and open HIJACK THIS. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and save it to NotePad. Copy the entire log and paste it here.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed. Wait for someone to analyze the scan and advise.

I think he can't get online at all right now. He can ping a site and use AIM. Must be ie. Will find out more and post.

Install spyware guard and spyware blaster. www.javacoolsoftware.com
They will offer constant protection so the spyware cant be installed, executed or downloaded. While spybot can only remove something already infected.
