some people just don't understand the full potential of the internet, and are satisfied just getting their mail on a dial up line. my dad, for example. he loves to play party poker, and that's about it. the dial up was working fine for him... but my brother in the same household likes to download videos, and play graphic intense games, so dsl is more for him... they ended up getting dsl at my parents house, but all my dad still does is play party poker.

Dialup, eh? I had that just about 2 years ago. But remember that dialup offers remote services - take your laptop anywhere, and all you need is a phonecord - not an Ethernet cord.

Having now experienced the internet with DSL, I don't think I could ever go back to dial up. But I know how some of you guys must feel, having dial up as the only real option.

Well, there's another aspect that people don't think about - it's almost suicide trying to run XP on a dialup, you will spend most of your online time downloading all the updates and patches. My customers are just starting to get the picture, they are groaning at the big maintenance bills I'm hitting them with sitting there for hours downloading stuff they need - and I tell them a 5 hour job will take less than an hour on broadband.

). Awhile back I decided to download SP1 for him and when it checked the stuff he needed, there was a total of almost 30 Meg that he didn't have! I dl'ed SP1 one day (just started it and let 'er go) and then got the rest of it the next day. Total time to dl everything was just under 10 hours.

Woah buddy, calm down. There's no need for that.
And you're right, you won't be back. |

sdfg I am glad you won't be back. I agree bigandy, he should calm down. Getting that excited over a little conversation isn't a good thing, especially for the blood pressure...
Anyway, I had dial-up till almost a year ago, then I tried cable. But the signal was too weak, and I was having trouble even getting a IP address, so I went to DSL. If I had to I could go back to dial-up, but the speed of DSL would be missed very much. I do empathize with those that don't have a choice and have to use dial-up. I have been there, and I really hope everyone will have a real choice in the near future. |

Well I live in the country. A town of 500. Shelton, a city of about 20,000 is 12 miles away. Hood Canal Communications the local phone/ cable company has everything. Cable, DSL, ISDN, fiber optic, T1, digital cable, regular cable, and even their own cell phone service. I love it. Great prices and service too.

I'm a new convert to broadband, just two months ago, but Istill have my dial-up account just in case.
I have to admit broadband is nice, and has it's advantages, like downloading service packs it's really nice, but I could also accomplish it with dial-up, a download manager, and yes alot of patience. If dial-up does what you want it to do, then why switch. I would still use my dial-up account, except I have a teenager, and it's a constant battle forthe phone

Hey mikeL, I wish we were that lucky! I live just 6 miles South of Jackson MS, a town of about 186,000. The best we can get, is DSL form the local phone company, and from what I hear, it's worse than using a tin can! Also, they charge an arm and leg for DSL. So, I guess I'm stuck with dial-up for now. It may be slow, but sure beats nothin".
