PCI or Onboard Ethernet?
So,
I'm using this Generic ethernet card I got off eBay. I Just got a new Mobo that has onboard 3Com ethernet. What would be better to use - an add-on card or onboard ethernet connection? Is one FASTER than the other? TIA,

Probably won't make any difference. Hey, but you could always switch em out for a test.

I would guesse the one already integrated in the motherboard would be faster.

Having used both, I can't see any difference.
If both are 10/100, I would think it would take a benchmark program to see if one was faster then anoter. Carl |

Integrated usually has good drivers... at least compared to a generic brand.

On-board, performs flawlessly, takes very little resources from the CPU and leaves me a PCI slot free.

I saw a difference, especialy in my freinds cable. To me i didnt see a difference realy with my low speed high speed DSL. (it chilled around 70kps) whilst my friend, who happens to use a company thats my foe, couldnt crack 80kps with his onboard, and so i gave him a 3com network card, which imediatly shot his internet beast up to around 300kps. From what I have learned, the CARD has its own little processor, giving it more to like gaming and so forth, while the onboard runs on your processor, making it slow-ness. But thats what I heard, and since Ive never went back to onbaord.

Neither of them (onboard vs pci) has better performance.
But 3Com is a very good brand, so use that instead of the generic one. RJ

As long as you use 10/100 3COM or Intel NICs, you wouldn't notice a difference.
As Nuke mentioned, a free PCI slot is always a good thing

Depends on the onboard chipset and the card chipset. 3Com and Intel are the top 2 out there for either type.
