Screwed Up

I added a video and sound card to my PC recently. I deleted the old PCI sound card, but I believe I screwed up and deleted the PCI ethernet hardware and software. I have added it back but cannot access the internet. I have Black Ice running and it is reporting internet activity (UDP packets from xyz source etc), so I know I have a connection. But I cannot access using a browser. I have checked the settings to make sure I didn't block my own access. I am connected to a hub with three other PCs, two of which are using W98SE like I am. I have copied all the settings and still can't get through. Any suggestions???
Thanks
Geeman

Is your PC obtaining the proper IP Address after all these changes?

Click Start>Run>Type Command Prompt, Enter

Type: ipconfig at the command prompt. Make sure it is showing the proper IP Address for your network. Or if this is connected straight to a cable/DSL modem you'll see your cable/DSL providers IP that they are giving you to connect to the Web.

Just let us know, and we'll figure out what you should do next.

Thanks,
Snakeyes.

I'm showing an ip address of 4.10.171.145 with a subnet mask of 255.255.240.0, and a default gateway of 4.10.160.1
I added these values to the TCP/IP properties. No change. I can ping myself, but I tried pinging one of the other computers on the hub, and fail each time. The other command is invalid.

That IP address is not a valid LAN Ip address.

192.168.1.x(1 for you, 2 for another PC, and 3 for another PC)

Subnet should be 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway should be 192.168.1.1(or depending on what you set for your LAN address)

Not sure if that is going to help you out, but worth a shot.

that's not true, his ip address probably is a valid ip, and it's picking all of the information up from someone. how is your network setup?

That the info I pulled from the IPCONFIG command. Network is setup as DSL router connected to Hub, 4 PCs connected to Hub. 3 running Win98SE (including the one I hosed) and one running Win2000. None of the other machines are having any problems.

If you have a router, just set a 98 box to obtain IP address automatically, remove the gateway, disable DNS, and use DHCP on the WINS tab.

Been there and done that. No change. I just plugged in a new NIC to see if my problem is hardware or software. No change in status. I'm sure that I'm overlooking something really simple....but I guess I'm too simple to see it!

After changing it to use DHCP, what IP address is it pulling in WINIPCFG? If it's a 169.254.xxx.xxx address, either the router's DHCP services are off, the nic or cable is bad, or the machine's TCP/IP stack is trashed.

Well I fixed it. More by accident than anything else. I was deleting some programs to prepare a disk wipe. One of the programs was a vpn program. This had also built a separate stack in the network neighborhood properties. I guess it was interferring in some way. because it looks like it's working now. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions.
