Question

I have recently installed outlook 2000 and now use it in place of outlook express for my email account. I usually start outlook 2000 with my inbox to check my email. It seems to take forever for it to check for new messages. Actually, there is delay before it connects to the sever and another delay before it downloads my new email. None of these delays were present in outlook express.

Is there anyway to speed up outlook 2000 so that it quickly looks for and downloads my email?

Does the send and receive screen look like the one in Outlook express? If not, you are using the workgroup option which checks for an Exchange server first (and causes the delay). You have to switch to internet only to fix this. Goto Tools/options, "Mail Delivery" tab and click on the "reconfigure mail support" button.

Mosquito,

Thank you very much for the tip. I think you are on the right track. However, there must be more to correcting the problem. I took your suggestion and made the change. Then I timed Outlook. It took a full 20 seconds for it to begin checking for my email. Afterwards it gives the message "connecting to server", which takes a few more seconds, and then it checks for incoming email.

Do you have any further suggestions?

Did you fill out the dns server addresses of your provider in the tcp-ip settings for your internet connection. If you don't do that, your machine has to look for a dns server first. This also can cause delays.
