Thunderbird junk mail filters
I have set up my dad with Thunderbird to try and free him of some of the hundreds of spam messages he gets every day. The problem is, it doesn't seem to be filtering anything. I have set about 40 custom filters with certain words I see in the spam. I even tested it be sending him an email from me with one of the words in thesubject. My "bad" email went to the junk mail folder while my "good" email went to his inbox. This doesn' seem to be the case for anything else. Everything goes to his inbox just like it did in OE. When he selects all the spam and clicks the junk button it is moved to the junk mail folder and thought to be done with. However, the next day, all of the same messages come back. On my Hotmail account when I click "This is Junk" it will move it to the junk mail folder and I will never see it in my inbox again. Isn't this how Thunderbird works? If not, it should work that way. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of some of this spam? Are there any standard filters, not custom, to apply?

I've just started using Thunderbird also.
In Tools, I've set it to make all mail not from someone in my address book, junk mail. When I open Thunderbird, I'll notice mail in the Junk Folder, I'll delete it to the Trash and then empty the Trash. I haven't done anything with the filters cause I don't know how. I would have to see a sample as to what a person enters there. Carl |

The problem with the "address book only" method is that my dad gets a lot of legitimate email from sources that aren't in his address book. As for your question, just look through your spam and search for words in the subject lines that show up frequently. Add filters to filter out email with those words in the subject. The problem I have is that it doesn't seem to be filtering out those words.

You have to "Train" Thunderbird to recognize junk mail. As it comes in, mark it as junk. The next time it will junk itself automatically. Not the greatest, as Spammers change their addy often.
