Unable to install Linux Mint 12
The past couple nights I have been able to use Linux Mint 12 live off of dvd. Decided to install it last night. Everything was going fine until I got to the screen where it ask your name, computer name, etc. and locked up. Shut down the computer and everytime I turned it on I would only get a black screen. Can anyone help?
Asus P8Z68 board, Core I5 2500K processer, 1TB hard drive, 8GB memory. |

Are you using a live cd or install cd? You could try downloading the opposite of what you have.
Also check your BIOS, make sure the SATA Mode is in ACHI mode and you can also try IDE Mode for the install and if it works, then change the BIOS back after install. If you have a live cd, does that work? |

Figured it out. For some reason computer was booting from the hard drive and not the optical drive anymore. Like I said I was using the Live version fine until I tried to install it. Don't know why the boot order changed.
I installed Mint 12 last night and it works fine. Lots of confusing advice as to how to partition the drive. One article I found recommended 500 MB for Mint and the Mint User Guide recommends 3 GB. What is the preferred partition setup for the hard drive? I have a 1 TB hard drive and 8 GB memory. |

/boot 300 MB
Swap 256 KB / 8000 MB /home the rest That is what I recommend when someone has plenty of ram. You shouldn't go less than 256kb on swap because mint does not like it. 8gb for mint instal is usually more than enough, mint only takes up about 3-4 so you have 4gb left however if you would like to then feel free to bump it up to 10gb or even 15gb. I just usually do 8gb and if I need more later I take it from the /home partition and add it to the / partition.
