I've been saying for the last 4 years I am going to build me a Linux box to play with... that was 4 years ago....

You dont even need a separate box. You have a bunch of cores at your disposal, run it in a virtual machine .

I tried that....I installed VMWare and set it up and installed a version of linux... it was very slow and unusable. Not sure wy it didnt work. I set it up with maximum cores and ram...

This MSI board isnt happy about a lot of things like that...

Did you look for the virtualization options in your BIOS and turn them on? That should speed it up drastically assuming you're virtualizing the same architecture. (eg., virtualizing ARM with a host of x86 will be slow, but x86 host and guest should be fast.)
