A few things I can think of to look into. First, Cinnamon requires hardware accelerated graphics and for that you will need to install the nvidia proprietary driver for your graphics card. Check this article if you are having problems with that task:

How To Fix Linux Mint 13 Nvidia Driver Install - DownFromTheTrees

You can also take a look at some of the suggestions posted on the Mint forum specifically dealing with this problem:

Particularly, look at the suggestions of Vincent Vermeulen re enabling 3d graphics and ram allocation in Virtualbox.

Still no dice with Cinnamon in Virtualbox (Mint runs fine, just no Cinnamon). Ram settings and 3D acceleration were set accordingly.

Works great from a live USB drive though. Gotta say, I really like it. Going to dual boot it on my laptop for sure.

Looks like my "distro-schitzo" (post #6) is cured....for now!

Mint 14 Cinnamon Desktop Working in Virtual Box

Mint 14 is out, and the Cinnamon Desktop is working for me now with the latest Virtual Box build (4.2.4).
