GUI Linux
I am looking for linux that has a graphical interface but the install must be low ram usage. The computer i am using has very little ram. It is a 500mhz p3. Anyone know of one. I tried installing mandrake but it kept breaking down. The same disk work on another computer.

Try vector linux. It's specifically designed for older hardware. I think the minimum ram requirements are 16MB.

Vectors site say that the newer versions of Vector need 64mb minimum. There are two downloads for Vector. The regular Vector 4.0 (or at least it was when I tried it, and Vector SOHO. I had trouble with one version, but the other worked fine. In fact I thought it was one of the better versions of Linux that I used. I think the SOHO version was the one that worked, but I am not completely sure.
On another board someone said that they were able to Knoppix GUI on their laptop which was a 233mhz CPU and 64mb of ram. Last edited by Karnevil9; 06-28-2004 at 04:52 AM. |

use a lowere end WM. That will bring your RAM needs down. IceWM is good

Haven't used it in a while. This was a bit back when, like so many others, I was trying to decide on a linux fllavor. I found it to be one of my favotires of the Linux flavors, for a beginner, but I didn't get to indepth as I was trying dffierent versions. I liked it and In fact I am about to try it again when I get other things settled.
Vector is based on slackware, so any problems that arise should be fixable. I have not used any Linux system that didn't have issues, some less than others. You may have to try several flavors before finding one that works for you. Try both versions of Vector, 4.0 and SOHO. As I said, one worked better than the other. That may be why someone was experiencing problems. |

Just about any linux will install and run fine. It's the GUI on top that's gonna take up all that ram. Follow Loco's suggestions and you'll be fine. HTH
