I am dumb, I am a neophyte to the Linux world, but today I have decided to commense operation firewall. I read an article on turning a 486 into a firewall/router using linux and loading everything to ram, so it goes fast as hell
http://www.zdnet.com/enterprise/stor...503199,00.html Thats it, well my question for all you linux fans out there is.. Where can I get a free distribution of Linux? What distribution would be good for this? I just downloaded Redhat 7.0 from ftp.redhat.com, but I dont know if that is actually linux or what not, hell it came with 13 ISO's and 1 other file, so i downloaded them all. I am stuck. Did i get the wrong one? If so what and where should i download? I have a cd-r, and broadband so, if someone could please put me in the right direction.. that would be great. Oh YAh, i have a copy of turbo linux on CD that came with my linksys switch.. is that a good one? |

E-smith is based on Redhat 6.2. It is about a 140MB download. It can only be used in server mode. You have no options when you install. The only thing that it asks is that it tells you that it will completely erase everything on your hard drive. You type "agree" and on it goes. You have very little configurability and it only asks a few setup questions. The install only takes about 15 minutes. But when you are done you a full fledged rock solid Linux server capable of working as a firewall.
You can download an iso image here |
