Question got suse 9.1 running. have few ?'s

I got a old pc from someone who didnt need it anymore and decided to install my suse 9.1 that i got free from novell. I got it installed no prob and i'm learning very quickly with the basic functions. I got the firewall up and running and i have it so that when i run port scanners from websites on me, everything is closed and stealthed. I actually wanted to take a bigger step in securing my box on the net by installing Snort. when i try to install it, it tells me i need libpcap.so.0.6.2. i have a newer version installed so i don't know if i have to uninstall the new one and go with the old version or should i look for a different IDS? Also, what are some good programs that most of you nix guys always install when you do a fresh install of your flavour of nix? mind you I am on dial-up. I wont get any kind of broadband around my area (except satelite) till next summer. Thanks.

Ok i got Snort installed and I downloaded the manual. I am having a hard time figuring out how to make sure its working. I started snort in the IDS mode and went to a port scanning site to scan me. after the scan, Snort didnt report back any attempts to get in my machine. I would like to have it autostart also. Am I doing something wrong in setting up Snort? Thanks.
