One of my clients works for a school in a small town literally in the middle of nowhere, so the only internet access they get is dialup with connections of 40k on a really good day serving 16 computers... ugg. What I would like to do to to speed up internet any way I can is take 2 of their old machines to build a Linux server. These machines are HP's, dual P-Pro 200's, 2Gb SCSI, and the motherboards have 8!!! SDRAM slots that actually accept standard PC100 RAM... go figure.

So here is what I need to know... is it possible to shotgun modems under Linux? If so, what is the recommended hardware/software to do this? Trying to keep this as cheap as possible, but will pay for good hassle free modems that will do the job if necessary.

This should help with the major slowdown on the current dial up machine which also has the printer shared to the 16 computers... would hate to be the student on that one.

Right on.... looks like I've got a bit of reading to do (still quite the novice at Linux), but if I can pull it off for them, it's bound to help them out a lot.

Multilinking is very effective for diallup as well, and uses the basic premise of PPP, so not much of a change in configuration. I've used it before the availability of hi-speed in some format.
Just make sure you load up a kernel as per your machine. No point going in for kernel 2.4.xx if a bug fixed version of 2.2.xx will do. & boy have there been quite a few NASTY bugs in the recent past.

Good luck
