I Hope I have posted this to the right forum,

To make a long story short, I need a Win 3.11 boot disk, I have located and copied the o/s disks from the internet, but have no boot disk, and this old Gateway 2000 (486) has no o/s on it, I am clueless, as to how to make one from my Win 98SE machine, and can't install WIN 98SE on old (486).
Help..and Thank you!

You basically need a DOS bootdisk. For example:

will give you a DOS 6.22 bootdisk: http://64.124.205.178/IMGS/DOS622.EXE
From this site
Once you have your dos boot disk, you need to format your drive appropriately to FAT16 [vis-a-vis FAT], with the bootable option and run setup from your Win 3.1x diskets
Or from : http://www.myshed.net/ [i've used these more, but the site is down for me, hope u have better luck]

These are executables that can be run from within any Windoze computer [9x/NTx] that will create a bootdisk for you. If you need further info on how to create a bootdisk from the files read the information on the respective site.

  • Windows 3.1/3.11 is NOT an OS! Hence does not have a bootdisk.
  • Windows 3.1/3.11 does NOT PRETEND to be an OS! Hence does not have a bootdisk
  • DOS is the OS

  • HTH

You & your granddaughter are very welcome. Was surprised to see a Win 3.11 query here, but u were right there, DOS has now become an alternative, eh?

Win 3.11 is VERY clean & compact, so should suit your needs well. It was a marked improvement over 3.1 .. wow this is a trip down memory lane!! & it was all optional .. hitting ALT+F4 would go bak to the DOS screen .. & best of all you can hit that power switch at any time!

    Cheers.
