Windows applications will not run natievly on it, and the link you provided is just one distrobution, there are a lot of different types (look at www.linuxiso.org ). It is a free operating system which means you can download for free and burn it onto a cd, although it is not like Windows, there is a steep learning curve invovled, and if you want to make windows apps to run you need to use an emulator, or look for alternates.

Can most applications work with Linux? Simply put, a Windows app is designed to run on Windows, a Mac app is designed to run on Mac, and a Linux app is designed to run on Linux. You would most likely need new software if you switched over to Linux. The beauty of Linux is that it is Open Source and there are a lot of free programs that can do as good if not better than their Windows based alternatives.

Almost every off the shelf game will not work on Linux, they require DirectX and that is Microsoft technology. I believe you can get an emulator for it, but I would keep gaming to Windows. You can get a copy of XP Home OEM for around $90 I believe.

Games simply don't run on Linux. If you play games you don't want Linux as your primary OS.

This is only partly true. Many games are now coming out with Linux versions as well, such as Unreal Tournament 2004.
