sever from home

i have ordered a high bandwith line (adsl) for my home. and i also have a dual p3 server too. my question is, how do i set it up for game hosting from home.i have a mandrake linux version 10.0, a linksys (wired) router.so far i setup the router to distribute the internet to 2 other computers and a ps2. so everything including the server is off the router.ive got 2 nic cards on my server with only one nic card (eth0) taking one port on the router. the other nic card (eth1) is not currently being used. the game im trying to host is counter-strike. If there are any other post in here that relate to this question please direct me. If anybody can help me...please help. thanx.

to add to that

ok i have looked through the forum and found that people have similar questions. just for more information on whats goin on here. ive got adsl 1.5 up / 768 down and i have primary and secondary dns, 2 static ips; a dual p3 linux (va linux systems 501) 2 18gig hard drives, 2 nic cards; a wired 4 port linksys router. i want to run a dedicated server (16 player counter-strike) from home and possibly a web server. what is the recommended choice of software to use and what do i need to know before i set it all up.

Before you start, does the isp allow you to run a server? If it does then in terms of a webserver you will probably want Apache. Here is an article about it (well about making a webserver): http://www.pcmech.com/show/network/690/ (you can ignore the parts about dynamic IP's). If you want a webserver you might want to register a domain name.

Ric just posted another guide in a seperate thread, I havent read through it completly, but it seems very good, and of course, up to the high standard of the rest of his site.

thanx wolfie...thats the exact link i had problems because i couldnt move the bin file to hlds directory and i couldnt exec. it

You should now be in the correct directory.

Next, click here to download the latest full version of the Half-Life dedicated server for Linux. The most current full version is called "hlds_l_3111.full.bin".

The package is no longer distributed as a tar/gz file. It is distributed as a .bin file that needs to be directly executed. So, after downloading the file, make it executable and then execute it. For example:

chmod a+x hlds_l_3111_full.bin
./hlds_l_3111_full.bin

You will be presented with a EULA, after which the usual tar/gz package will be extracted. From there you gunzip and untar as usual.
So let's type:

tar zxvf hlds_l_3111.tar.gz

The computer will then proceed to unpack and install the dedicated server in the hlds directory we created earlier in a directory called "hlds_l". When it finishes, type:

cd hlds_l

You should now be in the directory "/hlds/hlds_l". Now you need to download the Counter-Strike mod. Click here to download the latest full version of it for Linux dedicated servers. The most current version is called "cs_15_full.tar.gz".

Once the file has downloaded, type this in the CLI you are at:

tar zxvf cs_>15_full.tar.gz

This will unpack and install the Counter-Strike mod on your dedicated server. "

so now i deleted it and now im going to make the hlds directory and then download the bin file to the /hlds/ directory

its should be

cd usr/local/games/hlds/hlds_l_3111_full.bin

and where it says

chmod a+x hlds_l_3111_full.bin
./hlds_l_3111_full.bin

how come it is two lines of text rather than one like this?

chmod a+x hlds_l_3111_full.bin ./hlds_l_3111_full.bin

and there is this:

________________________________________________________________
The computer will then proceed to unpack and install the dedicated server in the hlds directory we created earlier in a directory called "hlds_l". When it finishes, type:

cd hlds_l
_________________________________________________________________

Where did it say i make a directory called hlds_l? So thats as far as i went then i got frustrated cuz the xwindows didnt start up and now i reformatted my system it and its a fresh install. i also know no that i need to type in

su

"rootpassword"

to be able to execute the bin file
