Question Want to try Linux

Hello everyone, as you can see from the thread title i want to try out linux. I know several people in my classes have tried but have not like it. I'm going to try out knoppix when i get home and see what it's like. If I do decide to go with linux, what would be a good distro to begin with? I've read several of the threads here and there have been several distros suggested. I'm not quite sure which to go with. I mainly use my computer for gaming, listening to music, surfing the net and talking to people on aim. I watch dvds every now and then, but not to often. I'm mostly concerned about the gaming and talking to people part.
It is my pc but i am not the only one using it. The other person using it wouldn't be able to use Linux most likely so i would need to be able to dual boot it. I plan on doing a fresh install of windows and eventually linux so i also had a question of how i should partition my hd. It's a seagate 120 gb 7200 RPM SATA retail drive.

Any help, comments and/or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i wouldn't really suggest linux if you want to use your computer primarily as a gaming machine. Most games do not work well on linux, so you'll need an emulator to play them. If you still want to try linux, i'd suggest duel booting your computer with windows xp and linux. Personally, I have only used suse and mandrake linux, and i have found both to be user friendly, and easy to learn. There's a free version of suse linux 9.1 personal (along with a lot of other distributions) at www.linuxiso.org

Alright, thanks for the reply. It looks like i'm going to just stick with windows for now. I'll have to try linux some day tho. I like the whole idea of open source. Plus it's free and not windows.

Well, in the meantime I strongly suggest you pick up some live cd distros and just play around with them. Ubuntu Linux http://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubu...er/000001.html or Knoppix are two good bets. Post back if you need any help installing a bootloader or partitioning your hard drive.
