Slackware dropping GNOME

Quote:
Apparently, the man in charge of Slackware's upkeep has reservations about continuing to maintain Gnome in the distribution, according to OS News.

Anyway, suffice to say the jury is still out. Since GNOME 1.4 I've felt that GNOME is going in a direction that doesn't fit well with Slackware's goals, and for at least as long I've considered removing it completely and taking whatever flames I get for that decision.

TBH I agree, and I've always used Gnome (hate KDE). It suffers from feature creep big time, but alot of open source projects do. The problem is people willing to write code want to work on some flashy new feature that they thought of, not do the boring stuff (like cleaning up installation issues).

Compiling gnome from source is a helluva big pain in the ass. And there's no reason for it to be like that when you're approaching the 3.x version of something that's been around for years and years.

*shrugs* I'm the other way. I've always disliked the way Gnome operated and used KDE instead. Granted, Gnome didn't take up as much system resources, but I'd take user-friendliness over a slight resource hog any day.

Couldn't read the info as the server is probably suffering from the Slashdot effect but it says that Patrick Volkerding is considering dropping Gnome but had not dropped it. The fact that Slack always elevates security and stability over features is actually one of the things that gives Slack a warm fuzzy place in my heart. I rarely if ever use a GUI and don't use Slack much any more but I do love their philosophy.

well from my perspective, the only reason my box has a GUI is for a couple of video apps that require X to start. so I can VNC into the box and start em up to do their thing then click right back out of it.

Gnome is lightweight and stable, and I don't need extra desktop features .
