linux first, then windows.
hey, this is what I want to do. I don't have enough money for windows xp, but i don't want to wait to play far cry until i have enough money. I've tried download ing linux from various places but non have worked. (boot disk faliure..) I was wondering if there was someplace that I could download a version of linux, that i can install, then when my windows xp hom comes in, I'll just wipe everything out and install windows xp home on there. I just can't find a linux that works? so, this is my main goal:
1. Install any type of os that can play various games 2. when my windows xp home cd comes, i'll just write window over linux. 3. Everything goes well... ( hopefully ) It doesn't have to be fancy, just good enough to play games like far cry, doom 3 medal of honor united offense, microsoft flight simulator, etc. thanks for the help. |

Most games are designed to work under Windows, Far Cry doesn't have a Linux version, however, it is possible to run it under Linux with some work.
You can easily delete Linux partitions and install Windows when you buy Windows XP. User-friendly distros are Mandrake, SuSe, and Fedora. You can download ISOs here: http://www.linux-iso.org/ For Mandrake get 10.0, for SuSe get SuSe Personal or the FTP install CD, and for Fedora get FC 2. All have installers as easy as Windows. Questions? Just post

Doom 3 has a Linux version and it runs great under Linux:
http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/doom/ As for Far Cry, you need an app called Wine: http://www.winehq.org/ Here's the game's entry: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=1743 Basically, you need to use the following installer: http://liflg.sourceforge.net/?page=art&artid=48 If you want Doom 3, then go ahead and install Linux, getting Doom 3 to work is as easy as in Windows. Getting Far Cry to work isn't as easy, especially if you are a new-comer to Linux, but if you pay attention and follow the guide, you can get it to work ![]() Good luck. PS: what graphics card do you have? The current version of Doom 3 supports nVidia only. Last edited by aym; 10-13-2004 at 05:17 PM. |

Boot disk faliure, insert system disk and press enter so i press enter and i get a black screen! Any suggestions? I am currently making another cd-maybe the cd is messed up but... thank you for your answer... |

two quick questions...
When you're using Nero, are you buring the file as an ISO? I ask that cause you need to. Second, is the harddrive you're trying to install this on a working harddrive? Are the cables conected correctly? |

cables
I tried switching the ide cables to make the cd rom first and then hd second. THe cables are apparently all connected and working, yet it still can't boot. I suspect either the file is corrupt, i downloaded it from http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...l_iso_int.html
or i didn't burn it right. Any help would b so very appreciated... |

Is your hard drive and CD RW on the same cable? If so you would be better placing them on seperate cables.
If you are getting a disk boot error like the one you say, it sounds as though your CD burning didn't take. What OS are you using to download and burn CD? Make sure the jumpers on the CD RW and HD are set correctly to Slave, Master, Cable select, depending on your set up. Then... 1) Download ISO image of SuSe, (or other OS of Linux) 2) Burn the ISO to disk as a disk image or ISO image under Nero. VDo not burn as a Data CD. 3) Go into Bios and change boot order to Boot from CD First. 4) Save and exit, and reboot system with CD in tray. If this doesn't work come back and will try to figure out what is going wrong.

Suse is a good distro to start with if you downloaded the Live Evaluation Version. This version runs from the CD. You must set up your BIOS to boot first from the CD. To get the PC to boot from the CD first you don't mess with the cables, you just do this from within the BIOS.

Hi Super_rip:
A couple of things regarding this thread first: This is NOT a chat forum, nor is it a realtime support system, this is a Bulletin board, post a question and wait a bit patiently before you come back every 4 minutes of so. And if you are adding on information in that short an interval, I'd suggest editting your previous post rather than posting a new one. Regarding the issue of not booting, it sounds like you burnt the ISO file (what Gibble has been pointing to) - you are to burn the CD Image as contained in the ISO file, not the ISO file itself. Insert your burnt Linux CD into a working computer's CD drive and check the contents, if all you see is ONE ISO FILE then you didnt burn it right. If you are using Nero, then instead of doing a New compilation, you need to OPEN (File > Open) the ISO file that you downloaded. That should open up the image file for a burn. |
