Linux - Getting Started

I am intrested in using linux on my computer. I have read many guides on 'getting started' but they all seem to assume prior knowledge of Linux. I have never used it before, so most of what they say I can't understand. I would primarily be using it for the internet, music, films and work. Could someone please explain in simple language about mounting CD/DVD drives etc. I also need to know how to install the modem - a BT Voyager 100.

Please help!

If you have not got a Linux disto yet you can download them free here
Mandrake is often suggested for people new to linux of if you buy a Linux magazine with a free disto they usually have installation instructions in the mag.
Once you have your disto loaded if you have any problems some one here will have the answer.

If you want to use Linux but not install it, you can try Knoppix. It boots and runs completely from CD, no installling. You just download an ISO image, use nero to burn it to a CD and boot. Nice way to preview without installling.

Check out this guide:

It is an excellent Linux starter.

I used a MEPIS trial disk to test Linux on my machine, and my main problem was not being able to connect to the internet. It said that it couldn't find the modem I am using (USB). Any ideas?
