External HDD

I am thinking about buying an External HDD to take to college with me. Is it possible to run Linux off the hdd or does an OS need to be on the main one.

If you can run linux on an external drive depends on alot of things. It would be easy if the external drive was SATA, but if it is USB, then your motherboard must support booting from USB. Likewise with firewire, but im not sure if they make boards that support booting from firewire

It's possible but not easy and probably beyond anyone not familiar with linux. Here's a link that discusses the issues involved in gory detail:
