why would anyone need to use linux?
Because it is a good FREE alternative to windows. It can be freely built upon to suit your needs. whats it used for? Much the same as windows, with less problems. Use it to runs a webserver, database server, fileserver, anytype really. Can be used as a simple desktop OS to accomplish everyday tasks such as, websurfin, wordprocessing, listening to music. There are other uses, but you can look those up yourself. is it really useful? For the average computer user yes. where can i get programs? Some sites I like to goto are www.tucows.com, and any BitTorrent site. Most all programs are under the GNU License, which simply allows you to install it and distribute it freely. can it do anything windows cant? Yes it can be much more secure. It can be developed by thousands of people, not just a few like Windows. is it compatible with the same hardware as windows? Yes, for the most part. Except for a few Winmodems. do you like chicken soup? Only when im sick. |

whats it used for? It's used as an alternative to the windows platform
is it really useful? Some say yes, some say no. As a desktop O/S, it has a ways to go, but for server applications, it can be handy. where can i get programs? Try googling for open source linux programs can it do anything windows cant? Not that I've seen, though it can do some things a bit easier. is it compatible with the same hardware as windows? For the most part, but if you have off the wall hardware, the O/S may not recognize it. The hardware recognition has gotten pretty good. do you like chicken soup? Definately a great thing to warm the insides on a cold day
