DVD-ROM drive doesn't work in Mandrake 10?
I'm running a dual-boot of Win XP Home and Mandrake 10.
When I was setting up Mandrake 10 originally, I kept getting a disc error at one of the first installation screens. In the end, I had to pull a DVD-ROM from another machine and use that to complete the install instead. Anyways, I now use my original DVD-ROM in Windows without problem most of the time. But the odd time I want to install new programs in Linux via CD or watch a DVD, I get errors that I assume are related to the fact that my DVD-ROM doesn't appear to be compatible with Mandrake. I checked in the Mandrake Configuration Tools menu and it is listed there. But does anyone know how I can get it to work? It's a standard Lite-On Black IDE 16x DVD-ROM. Thanks in advance!!

Are you using the "mount DVD" command when you are trying to use it? I am assuming Mandrake 10 still uses the mount unmount commands.

Unlike windows where you just put a cd or dvd into a drive and play, Linux uses, or used to use (Mandrake 9 did) a mount and unmount command. They usually have an icon for each one in the "start" menu. To use something like a dvd player you would mouse click on the mount command. That would in essence turn the dvd rom on ad you can then use it. When you were done you would then click on unmount, essentially turning it off.
First time I used Linux I couldn't get my CD out of the CD drive It took a while before I figure out I had to click unmount to make the drive open it's bay and let me remove the CD. |
