Mac OS X email client suggestions

We have several Macs in house and at present they use Microsoft Entourage as an email client.

We've had a few problems with losing emails (databases being rebuilt etc.) and I thought I'd ask if there are any robust email clients out there for OS X.

Basically we don't need anything fancy just reliable with also an easy route to backup all emails (preferably a menu option for the technophobes!).

Can anybody suggest anything?

Cheers

DJ

I believe the mozilla people have an email client for mac called thunderbird. Might be worth a look but their website is jammed right now because firefox 1.0 final was just announced today. I use the windows version on all my windows boxes because of security concerns with Outlook Express and it works fine.

Yeah I've looked into Thunderbird - is there any backup facility built in?

Not that I'm aware of; you have to manually backup the data files in the "Mail" subfolder IIRC.

Thats easy enough for me but trust me some of the users in house I wouldn't trust to open a can of baked beans that was already open - if you get my meaning. Its a menu option or not at all!

In linux or unix, I would just make a shell script to backup the designated files and run it automatically as a cron job daily. OS X is BSD under the hood so I would guess you have the same functionality. I couldn't even begin to tell you how to do that on OS
X or how access the shell. Wish I had a nice Mac laptop with OS X to play around with.

personally I just use apple mail but any mail program on the mac can be automatically backed up. Just write an applescript to backup the selected folder. Run the script as an ical alarm action at set intervals (or at startup/shutdown/log off or as a cron event) and viola, auto backup of any mail program.
