Hi
Looks like RedHat 7.1 is out with the new 2.4 kernel, am sure you are as surprised as me to see them come out sooner than Mandrake. Both come with 2.4.2, while RedHat has a newer version of Xfree86. The cons, or why not to go to RedHat, they are turning increasingly commercial, by refusing to provide automatic updates for more than 30 days, as opposed to Mandrake. Mandrake also ships with more stuff for the workstation right off the bat, including something I have grown to love - Nautilius. I'd recommend waiting till later this week, Mandrake beta has obviously been waiting patiently for RedHat to commit, expect the final to have much newer stables than the hat. |

Hi!
I think that I'm going to stay with 'Drake for a while longer. Red Hat is a very good distro, don't get me wrong, but I like Mandrakes' update policy better. Plus it gives me all the apps that I want to use right with it. So I'm waiting for Mandrake 8.0. Perhaps I should add another harddrive and try them both! ![]() OOPS!

It depends what you need ur linux for I guess. No question abt it am with you, Mandrake is the better distro and the better development team but I still dont trust it for my servers. I dont say that RHat is a better distro, its just that most stuff out there is based with the RedHat distro in mind, and is geared towards their releases.
I've banished RHat out from my workstations and GUIs a while back, not only are they slow in getting out the new stuff they are also slow at allowing axs to bug fixes. |

Yes it does depend on what you use it for. I have Slackware 7.1 that I am using as an Apache server for web development. I barely even use the mouse on it now. Mandrake is the best at new stuff and usually has the best desktop but I really have no need for that. I upgraded to the 2.4 kernel just for fun but I really didn't need to.

Slack is very good stuff from what I hear. Someday when I get a little better at this and can scrape up a new box, I would like to try Debian. I like the idea of Apt-get. I get frustrated with trying to hunt down all those dependencies sometimes.
