Well... So i sit and debate it with myself for over 6mos... Finaly came to the unmistakable conclusion that to be a TRUE computer geek I gotta break into the nik scene... Yup,went and did it! made the giant leap.. Im so proud! And the BLAM! My first real prob.. Trying to connect my dail up with my brand new (250meg D\L!)winlinux2000 and I get a pop-up saying this kernel doesnt suport PPP!!!! Now,I dont know ANYTHING about Linux(my first time) but I am assuming that changing the kernel is somthing best NOT done by newbies??? And if it IS somthing I can do where do I get the newest kernel from? Im totaly lost here,so any help, advice you could give would be greatly apreaciated.. Thanx!

I'm not familiar with the distro, but latest verstion's of linux distributions always have PPP module included in the kernel. If you really think that the kernel is the problem, you can always dowload a newer kernel in the rpm format. Again I don't know if your distro supports rpm but if it does, then using rpm to update the kernel is your best bet.
Or better yet get the more popular distributions. You can buy one, download, get one from computer magazines or books. |

Well.. The reson I went with WinLinux2000 was for a couple resons, 1) It uses the same disk format as windows so I didnt have to repartition... 2) ease of install,it installs from windows just like a windows progie and 3)Most importantly, since it uses the same disk format, the free space on my disks is shared between both systems... This is very important to me cos I only have limited space... So i really do need this one or a similar one. I understand some Slackware vers. operate the same way,but they dont have the same fetures as this one does(This was suposed to be a full install)... The RPM thing would be great, but my ISP only let me connect if I have PPP or POP in place... So i guess what i need is a place I can D\L the newest kernnel with windows, and once I have it I need to know how to go about installing it...Or IS this even somthing a total newbie should attempt?

RPM is pretty easy to use. It will even tell you if some other files needs to be updated before you install a package. The usual command is rpm -Uvh
If your unwilling to update your kernel or you have problems and don't want a lot of headaches trying to fix them, then I suggest getting a different distribution. I know one which is similar to what you want, it's called phat linux. Same installation, through windows and no re-partitioning and it should have PPP included in the kernel. I still don't know why the distro does not have PPP on it, have you read the HOWTO file on how to setup an internet connection? OOppps forgot to add the site http://www.phatlinux.com |

Well.. Now Im reinstalling both windoze and Linux for unrelated resons,so I havent had a chance to read it well.. what I did see makes me think it SHOULD have it as well.. it has the 2.2.13 kernel and it suports everything else just fine... Kinda wierd actualy... Thanx,I'll check out the phat, just kinda dread another massive d\l,but hey if it works its better then where Im at now! 8-)
