Any one will work....though you may want to consider using something other than KDE or Gnome for your GUI.

why would you recommend avoiding KDE and Gnome, Loco? aren't they two of the most popular gui's?

I believe it is because of the low specs of the machine.

Well, any true lightweight wm might be to hard for a beginner, so I would suggest xfce4 or icewm.

ICEWM is a good choice. Or you could use an older version of Gnome (Older KDE was a bit weak). Of course, you could do it the way I do......command line baby...all at th3e shell prompt!

some advice please
I have an old Dell diminsion PIII 1gb with agp 64mb nVidia and soundblaster live. I've formatted it and installed ME without all the old Dell stuff. I'm using it mainly as a learning tool. I would like to try Linux but don't know anything about it. How difficult is it to use and what all would I need to download to get going? Before installing Me I installed my copy of XP Home just o see if I could. It went very well and ran till the time to activate. I then installed Me which didn't go very well at all. I had a difficult time partitioning the drive. I created a 98SE boot disk and used it. I've never liked the ME version of windows so I'd like to try Linux. I just use it to do basic banking and surfing the web. Some of the simple games like majong and the like too. What are some things that will run and won't run on it? I went to the linux homepage and it looks like I need many different downloads. Can you help me out? Thanks
edit: It has the 815 chipset (I think) and 384 mb of 133 ram.
