Mandrake Linux and WinXP Pro in 1 PC

I've plan to install Mandrake Linux and WinXP Pro on my Pentium 3 PC. 2 OS will be installed in different partition.

Question:
Where/How should i start after i reformat the PC? Install WinXP first or Linux first will be easier?

How to switch OS? Set the default boot up OS?

I'm a first timer for the Linux. If you think i'm totally off the road, pls help provide link and guide to show me the way.

I'm thinking to set the Mandrake Linux as my default OS.

Definately install windows first. Mandrake will take care of everything else....it will install a boot loader for you (either grub or lilo) which lets you select your os at bootup.

1. the usage of that computer is just for internet surfing, download, and playing media files. is it possible for WinXP Media Edition to replace WinXP Pro for my need?

in short: is WinXP Media Edition good?

2. i only use Mandrake and Gentoo before. and i've completely attracted by Mandrake's GUI. But no one is talking about Mandrake in this forum.... is Mandrake bad?

No, mandrake is very good and one of the most popular linux distros out there. For newbies, the most commonly recommended distros are mandrake, suse or fedora. If you really want to talk mandrake, go here:

http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?act=idx

The above is an independent mandrake users site and an excellent forum for any mandrake user.

I know nothing about winxp media edition other than the demo I saw in the mall where they had a booth setup. I was not impressed. I can't imagine why you would want to get this if you already have winxp pro.

If you have broadband, you can download mdk10.1 from mandrake's site:

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en-us/

Don't even try this with dialup. If that's the case I would recommend purchasing the cds from one of several services that redistribute burned linux distro cds(all perfectly legal by the way). Edmunds is very good and very reasonable(mdk10.1 four cd set for under $10, shipping included):

Get this one:

Mandrakelinux 10.1 Official ISOs/i586

Sygate has a free windows firewall and AVG has a free antivirus.

You don't need antivirus in linux. Mandrake has an excellent built in firewall called shorewall. Sygate is for windows only; get it here:
