Have people tried it?
Does it really run windows under linux, and do a good job at it? Are there programs that won't run under it?

Worth it
even if you are buying. Windows will run under linux or even vice versa.
The only catch is that you need to have some juice in your computer. It sounds bloated and it is by the time you go about running windoze |

I tried it at work and got it to run quite smoothly with a PIII 800, but I had also crammed 512Mb of RAM into the system. Boot time was still quite slow for the virtual machine. Install time of Win98 was just plain painful.

Thats the proof of bloatware in M$. You wont believe the performance jump when going about it the other way around!

Can you even do gaming under it? Is it too slow to attempt, or does it work well?

If you had enough oomph, you could probably game. I never tried it with the 800Mhz + 512Mb, but the system itself seemed to run quite smoothly.

Oh boy .. i had nothing but trouble with Bochs. I know its just an opinion but VMWare may be lethargic but it works, Bochs is great .. .. if the Gods smile on you..
Testbed for comparison on VMware : Linux 2.2.19 kernel + Win2K professional. Bochs .. last I tried was with Win98SE on a Linux 2.2.14 and got frustrated and dumped it (This is actually the first s/w that I have ever flat out refused to work with) .. NB: I acknowledge that it isnt Bochs' fault, its M$ Windoze at fault .. Windoze is always at fault eh

hmmmmm....
I've never had any problems with it, but as I said, I have not yet bothered to build it on Linux. I picked up a precompiled binary for Windows at the ReactOS project and built it on my SPARC box with no problems. it is a bit complicated to set up, but I haven't had any issues once I have an environment set up. of course, it is missing some of the niceties of VMWare, but that's acceptable for my purposes.
....and, quite frankly, it's against my religion to buy any software for my SlackWare box....of course, there would be exceptions, if it wasn't a workstation. |
