Not sure how mepis does things, but the file you need is grub.conf. Mine is in /boot/grub/grub.conf
What you have to remember is that grub starts counting at 0, so hda1,2 becomes hda0,1 for example.
Try putting the following at the end of grub.conf

title=Windows XP
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
makeactive
chainloader +1

Wink Grub

Thank you for your quick reply.but I don't understand what you mean by editing Grub with .config. But thats ok.would you happen to know if the Grub in Mepis is grub legacy or ver.2??? I got my windows XP and 98 back but I can't get into Mepis,are you aware if there is a place that I can download Grub and burn it to floppy or C/D? Since I am learning I'm not in a hurry, there is no data in Mepis and the data that I did have on my XP is gone. So thats ok because it made me a convert to the church ofBackup! Mepis,I just like to use it and I like to use it to browse and also its helping me to learn Linux. And again Thank you very much

grub.conf is a file. you can edit it with your favorite tool. be aware that different distros may use different grub config files. menu.lst is (if I remember correctly) used with Red Hat while most of the rest of the world uses grub.conf or something simular.
