Fedora Core 3 works well on my computer... First distro to completely recognize everything(I think...). No need to install LAN drivers, or sound drivers which is what stopped my time in Slackware 10. I would say any of the recent releases from either Fedora(core 3), Mandrake(10), Slackware(10), or maybe Suse, although Ihaven't used Suse ever since I didn't like the install scheme... I want my CD's.

Seagull, if want one heck of an expirience on a seperate machine, not a dual boot or anything fancy go to Mepis.org. It blows Windows XP,Mac,Mandrake,Redhat all of them away!!! I mean this thing flies and configures itself, comes with usb.02 and firewire support. I got into trouble because I'm just learning and trying to quad-boot and configure what I don't even know what the definition of things are. Oh I forgot the new distro is called "Simply Mepis" nd it is fantastic. Chiquito.

I think Lindows gives you the worst of both worlds........
Your mandrake 8 is fine. I say install it and play with it for a bit and see what you think. Then maybe you can get a newer version or different distro. Good Luck!

Seagull, I have to warn you about Mepis,First of all its addicting because this is hotter than Firefox,Windows XP, and Longhorn all put together. #2, if don't register it and you need support all you have to do is go to the Mepis Lovers.com and .org and they will help you a super bunch of people and they are all helpfull like here with D.Risley. The support and installation is unbelieveable. The only reason that I got into trouble is cause I can't leave well enough alone,I want to be a tech and learn so bad that I don't care if I never make any money at this cause its so da--n interesting. After you have it installed you are going to wonder why or who needs windows!!! Good Luck my friend,Chiquito!!!

After reading though this thread. I have downloaded Mepis, the newest verison I found.
Which was 2003.10. Not sure if that is the newest free download or not but one I found on a mirror. I just burnt my ISOs and will try the install tonight after work.

Well, I had some minor set backs, probably me being such a newbie at Linux. First the PC I was running it, the monitor can't handle the default resolutions, so I only have it running on my Pen Drive though Q emu. However coming to PCMECH, I am getting a message there is a script causing problems for KHTML, causing KHTML to freeze. I keep telling it to abort but that isn't doing much for me. However regards of the issues I am having, I don't blame the distro, as I am sure it is good, it looks good and believe this or not, I have a 700 meg distro of Mephis installed on my Pen drive and it is running faster then DamSmallLinux on the same pen drive and it is only 50 megs.
Granted, damsmalllinux loads much faster, but Mephis seems more responsive once instead KDE. |

been upgraded again, the version you have downloaded is a year old. I am going to give you my opinion, because I've been lurking in these forums for a long time. I really want to know and learn, and I never thought someone could be so dumb because I thought it was easy untill I started to trrrying to learn. It would behove anyone to spend some $s and buy the book by Robin Miller called Point and Click. #1,you get the book which is very informative and #2,you get the book and tutorial in a DVD,#3, you get the complete C/D of the latest "Simply Mepis". If you want to spend less you can go to Mepis.org and get everything for under $15.00 Shipped. Bro,you will be completely blown away. I comes Complete with the Gimp, all of KDE,all of OOo,more games that you can play in a year, it will configure itself to a modem, graphics card, configure itself to a wireless. Three web browsers, and I can go on,and on,oh yeah and DSL with just a click. Now if you still need help or you yourself done something dumb like I did you complete supportat the Mepis Lovers .com and .org forums and they are real pros and nice people just like the people here. They have Linux teachers and website owners and everyone tries to help everyone else. Now it sounds like I work for Mepis but the don't even know me. In fact if they know anything about me is I did not know to log in properly that I had to get "forgot password" about seven times one night. This package is so hot that it is so far ahead of windows and all the othe Linux flavors that after you use it you will wonder ,Why Mepis isn't used everywhere. Anyway if you want a good expirience, one because you can't beleive all the free stuff you get, good luck my friends,Chiquito |
