Linspire?
I'm currently trying out Linspire with their free live CD. I must say, I really don't see anything that sets Linspire apart, except for the fact that everything is relabeled and reskined. For example, the Linspire Internet Suite- on it's splash screen it says "powred by Mozilla 5.0", the KDE splash screen instead says "Linspire" and only once said KDE for a very brief few seconds... XMMS? It's there too, but known simply as "MP3 Player", it's skin has a great big Linspire "L". The file system browser - it's labeled only as "Browser", when you choose "About Browser" you get a link to Konqueror, what the "browser" really is.
I must say I'm disapointed to see so much Linux software "disguised" as a product of Linspire. Anyways, that brings me to the question about the license- I thought under the GPL you had to release the source code, which would be why all other distros have a free version. How does Linspire get around this, just with their Live CD? Have I simply misunderstood the GPL? Overall, I don't see anything good about Linspire, but I do see that it tries to take credit for a lot of Linux apps, I don't like that. L J

A lot of people share your sentiments about linspire. It's really designed for people that know nothing about linux which obviously doesn't describe you.
Re your question about licensing, the GPL does not require that the software be made available for free, only that the source code be available on request. Most distros do have free downloads but it is not required. |

Is linspire under the GPL? I had the impression that it was using a differnt linc scheme. Maybe a hybrid? i don't really know...I should probally do some research on this.
You know, I took a single lok at linspire (lindows back then) and was so turned off by it, that I haven't went back for a second look. It seems to me you get most of Windows's and Linux's drawbacks with it as opposed to the best of both worlds. my 2 cents

Nice find Statica.
Still a little annoying how you have jump through hurtles to find the source code. L J |
