MP4 editing

I'm using an open-source DVD ripper known as HandBrake, and it works great. It encodes into MP4 and uses AC3 audio encoding. Can I work with these in Final Cut Pro? Also, is there a way to further compress the file?? For about 135 minutes of footage, the files are approx. 1.2 Gb, which I think is pretty large for that amount of time. I'm a noob to video editing and encoding and whatnot, so I don't know what can or can't be done. If anyone knows anything useful, that would be great. Thanks guys
