I'm new to Linux using it for about a week now, and I'm wondering if there is a way to use my version of NS or Opera that I use in Windows98. I've copied these files to my TMP folder in linux but I can't get either to start. My system is a dual boot with WIN98 and Mandrake 7.2 with Kernel 2.2.17 any ideas would be great. Thanks in advance

Mandrake 7.2 comes with Netscape. You already have the browser there. When you say you copied the files, do you mean the installation, or your user folder? The installer written for Windows will not work in Linux. You can though copy your bookmarks, and address book to Linux. I use Netscape in Windows and in Linux. My machine is also a dual boot. I just "import" the address book or bookmarks to Linux. If you are using Netscape 6, I do not know how to help you, I have gone back to 4.7 because my wife did not like the new version. Maybe someone can help you with Opera.

Welcome to Linux MikeL
Yeah Ive not been able to import my NS links out of MS either. Personally, I recommend giving Konqueror a try. It's a dual purpose file/web browser like IEx. You have it in 'Drake. For me, it much faster and more stablethen NS4.7x. The only real draw back is that it dosen't have a built in mail client. For me thats OK, I like to use Kmail any way. Welcome and good luck again!! OOPS!

Try this: In Netscape, click on bookmarks, go to edit bookmarks, go to File, Import, tell it where your bookmarks are and go. You will still have to clean them up a bit, ie get rid of all that Netscape has loaded in there.
Also you might want to give Mozilla a try. It has been better than Netscape since Version 0.7. Now it is at 0.9. It has everything that Netscape should. |

Thanks for the info guys,
OOPS, I thought I read somewhere that Konqueror was a browser, but I never really looked at it, I'll check it out. mairving, I have the bookmarks figured out,and as for mozilla I've been using it since build 6 or 7, just after NS-6.0 came out and flopped, downloading it as I type. Statica, I'm going to check out this Galeon thing when I finish here. Thanks again for the help it may not seem like much, but when you have become dependent on Windows, learning what Linux is all about is rather daunting. |
