How to install CMedia 8738 cmpci driver into Debain Linux
I have an older P3-450 PC with a PC Chip M741LMRT motherboard. The motherboard has on-board sound (CMedia 8738). The PC worked fine in Windows98.
Recently I uninstalled Windows98 and loaded Debian Linux into the PC. I am using it as a platform for learning Linux. When I am in Linux and bring up the Xserver, KDE, everything works fine with the exception of sound. When KDE starts up, I got the error message "Error whle initializing the sound driver. Device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device). The sound server will continue using the null output device." I know the CMedia driver is cmpci. I tried to use the line command "modprobe cmpci" to install the driver but I got the error message "Can't locate module cmpci". Anyone knows how to install the cmpci driver in Debain Linux? |

Sounds like you'll need to recompile your kernel to include it as a module, or a built-in module. I'm pretty sure you'll find it in the OSS section of the kernel config.
