Knoppix saves the day

Today, somebody handed me a laptop that was constantly bluescreening. Generally, it would crash on bootup; if it made it into Windows, a few seconds later it would crash again. Nothing I tried would work, so I realized I had to start all over with a fresh install.

There was a lot of data on there, though, and I couldn't get into Windows long enough to do anything. So I popped in my trusty Knoppix CD, got my USB pen drive, and easily copied all the documents on the drive. After a clean install, I restored the documents and it was good to go.

I like Linux a lot both because it is useful and because it is an alternative to Windows, but today it really proved its usefulness.

Thats one of the many uses I have found for Knoppix. If you ever get one of those pesky spyware files you cant seem to get rid of because its being used at the time, slap in your knoppix cd and delete it from there. Done alot of data rescue from HD's with Windows install that got all jacked up. Glad im not the only person that uses it for that.

Geez! I couldn't even begin to count all the times Knoppix has come to the rescue. I use it for everything from verifying hardware, to rescueing windows. Lately I have been using it as my main OS! I created a persistant directory on my USB stick and I carry that and the knoppix CD. Have you seen the new 3.8 distro?

Wow, that is a great idea. I never thought of that. Sure beats using that awful Windows DOS rescue disk to try to get to files or test the HD.

I have a copy of Suse that runs from the CD, should it work?

Hey, I just tried the Knoopix disk, pretty cool. Does a nice job of leeting me see what was on my Windows HD. I might just transfer it to my HD.
