I tried to try it but gave up until I had a spare drive to put it on which I now have but as Gentoo is not the easiest distro to install its not at the top of the list. The new drive has Ubuntu on it at the moment and although I have not had a lot of time to play with it, it looks good. All my hardware was detected straight away and the install proccess was very simple.

Yeah, IMO it is kind of a tie between Gentoo and Linux From Scratch when it comes to hardest to install.

With Gentoo though at least, if everything goes smooth it's at least doable for a mortal

If there is an error though, you're done. When they say configurability, they mean you must configure every aspect of the install. I wouldn't recommend even trying to install Gentoo until you have had around a years experience with Linux and have compiled a kernel before.

I in my case have guiven up gentoo for Yoper and it is very fast it loads faster ther my other o/s, but it has a drawback it is very minimalistic and it occupies only one cd rom
