Mandrake Linux 10.1 sound problem

I am new to Linux. I am using my old PII-400 machine to learn Linux. I installed Mandrake Linux 10.1 on the old machine. Installation was very smooth and I am up and running in no time. During the first install Mandrake used ALSA for sound and it worked fine. I had sound and was able to get onto Internet using Linux.

Because I am in learning mode, when I found a software sndconfig I thought I give this software a try also. I must have selected the wrong sound driver using sndconfig because sound does not work anymore.

I noticed that after I used sndconfig, ALSA does not install on boot anymore. On boot, Mandrake tried to load some sound module but failed.

How can I uninstall what I did using sndconfig and go back to use ALSA?
