I just downloaded and installed Redhat Linux 7.1 on my PC. It dual boots with WinME. The installation was surprisingly smooth and simple. I am experiencing two issues. The first is that when I login using GNOME, my password is authenticated, the screen goes black and the login screen appears again. If I login a second time the desktop comes up normally. This happens with both of my regular accounts but not root. The dot files look normal for both users and I did not have enough disk space to install KDE so I can't check to see if the same thing happens there. My second issue is that when I try to remotely login to the Red Hat box via telnet or rlogin (using the IP or hostname) I get connection refused. I am able to log into other workstations from the Red Hat box with no problem. I have never seen this before and /etc/hosts looks OK. Is there a daemon that needs to be running or some other file that needs to be configured? What am I missing?

try adding the local subnet or the individual machines' IP addresses addresses to the /etc/hosts.allow and see if it lets you connect:
ALL : ALL for everything. ALL : 127., 10.0.0 for the subnet and localhost, etc Red Hat does stuff differently on the X configurations, so I don't have a clue. |
