Exclamation What is your favourite Free operating System

I have written this post to find out more About user preferences, and to make it more of a guide to selection of Alternative Operating Systems.

So I start the Post with my favourite O/S

Linux YOS - Yoper from www.yoper.com

In the end I might make a poll with diferent selections

P.S. if the moderator is interested in making this post a sticky i have no objection

MandrakeMove, just got it and it works great on my PC. I've had problems with RedHat and dropped it at 9.0. I have yet to try SlackWare and I hear great things about it but all my HD's are full.

Debian, Debian, Debian and recently some of the ones based on it like Ubuntu and Xandros because of thier fantastic GUI's and ease of use. I really do like Slackware and still run it one machine for security testing and all, but apt-get is just too sweet

Slackware, Debian, and Ubuntu(based on Debian I guess) are the ones I will be using as soon as I get a mouse for my newly aquired old clunker of a machine. They have all worked well for me and were a joy to use.

Suse 9.1 dual booting with Winows ME on my main drive and at the moment Ubuntu on my other drive. I really like Suse and will be updating it to 9.2 soon it is the disto I use most at the moment. Ubuntu is a disto I have only recently started to use but it is also very good and I have Xandros, Yoper,Knopix, Mandrake and FC3 all on CD/DVD to try out (some I have used before but some time ago)

has anyone tried FreeBSD?
www.freebsd.org
I tried it when it was out way back in 1991...
I do not see it as one of polling options.

NOTE:
A lot of Internet BACKBONE ROUTERs uses FreeBSD!(ISPs)

Well, in fact, all of "Juniper Networks" routers use it, dont know about Cisco
routers though.( u know......T1, ATM, OC-3, Oc-12...OC-192[192MBytes/s !!!!] )
a typical ADSL connection( 1.5M) goes at about 200KBytes/s-320KBytes/s.

Due to the number of avilable options in the poll I could not include all available operating systems so I put all nonlisted operating systems on the other category.

From Distrowatch.com. Has a top hits type list, those are the first 24. Must be there for some reason. Try one of the top ones and just see if ya like it. Most besides Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, SUSE, Debian, Gentoo, Knoppix, and Slackware are going to have a smaller support base and it may be harder to find help when needed. All of the above have many users and many forums ready to help.

1 Ubuntu
2 Mandriva
3 MEPIS
4 Fedora
5 SUSE
6 Debian
7 KNOPPIX
8 Gentoo
9 Slackware
10 Damn Small
11 Xandros
12 FreeBSD

14 SLAX
15 KANOTIX
16 CentOS

18 Red Hat

I really like Mandrake 10 which is on the comp in my sig and runs incredibly well but it appears that it has undergone a name-change to mandriva

Yea, supposedly Mandrake and Connectiva Linux merged, hence the name change.

Yea im running Mandrake 10.1. I was using Fedora Core 2 but had a couple problems with drivers so switched to mandrake. Im thinking of trying out suse just to see if its any different than mandrake.

Operationally SuSE seems about the same as Mandrake or Fedora, but I think it's hardware recognition may be slightly better. SuSE does have a different "feel" than other linux flavors. It incorperates many of it's own icons so on the surface it doesn't look like the others.

Am I the only person who uses BeOS? I find it a lot more instantly user-friendly than linux...

I currently dual boot between 98SE and BeOS R5 Max Edition.

www.bebits.com

You really want Max Edition, which you can find here
Depending on your hardware, though, it may not work. I know someone who tried to install it on an Athlon 64 system and it wouldn't boot.

Just burn the iso to a disc and boot into it... it'll do it all for you (except partitioning).

My fav live CD distros.

Insert linux - www.inside-security.de/insert_en.html - good system rescue toolkit
system rescue CD - www.sysresccd.org/ - another good toolkit

Puppy - www.goosee.com/puppy/ - looks like win95 but with better performance.
feather linux - featherlinux.berlios.de/ - V.nice

More to come.
