More Linux Questions
I am running Linux on a 3 year old computer... still, it seems to run pretty slow [I have tried bother Xandroous and Suse]. Open office takes forever to open. I think Linspire runn office a CD was almost as fast, Is there anything I might need to ressert or adjust?
If I want an application from the LiVE Linspire disk, is there any way to transfer it to my computer that is already running Linux? Is there an install process, or do I just cut and paste the program to my HD? |

Sorry, thought I replied a few days ago.
My system: 833Mhz, 256 mem memory, SIS 630 motherboard. 20 gig HD. Like I said, and older system - yet I just trired Win XP on it, and it runs pretty fast. Am I incorrect to think Linux should run faster. VectorLinux was reasonably fast. Although I don't think it loaded or quite as fast as XP. And Windows seemed to handle images/jpgs and opening them quicker. Also applications seemed to open much faster with Windows. Does Linux need more memory? A particular procesccor? ............................................................. ComputerL White box, generic, SIS motherboard, ST HD etc |

Linux can be faster then XP, but that is when it is tweaked and tuned.
Changing the Windows Manager(KDE and GNOME are standards and slightly more sluggish then some like Blackbox) can speed it up by freeing up memory and all. Disabling extra services/modules, updating drivers... etc. I can't think of many others, perhaps a google search for tuning linux or something similar might turn things up. Linux can become faster then XP for the fact of the massive amount of ability a person has to edit, well, everything, whereas in XP you can't. To install that application that you used on Linspire CD, you can ssearch for it at sourceforge.com or on google. There are probably also many alternatives, since Linspire makes you pay monthly, which I thought included their programs. You may not be able to find the EXACT program, but one much like it. |

Linux loves ram; 256MB is not enough for kde or gnome on most modern linux distros. A lighter window manager should help. Vector uses icewm by the way and is also based on slackware which is one of the fastest linux distros. If you could increase your ram, that would significantly increase performance.

Yoper fits on a single 700MB CD/ROM and is very well optimized for i686 architecture such as pentium II, III and IV and AMD. It Uses only KDE 3.4 It usually takes 5 to 15 minutes to install after the options At the begining it may seem to have a problem with CD/Rom drives but it does not it only searches for some drive brands after all the brands it selects the /dev/CDROM/ device. Damn Small Linux Is about 50MB in Size and has links to other small distros. The other two I only know by their web sites never tried them i am jus waiting for the mags to launch another distro bonanza and then I will see if they are good? |

Linux doesn't eat RAM, KDE and Gnome do! You want speed and instant gratification, ditch X and init 3..... ;-)
