Linux box

I am wanting to network my Windows 98 machine to a Linux machine and have the Linux machine run as a firewall to the Internet. I plan on using the Linux system to teach myself how to use linux. I have a few friends that will help me setup this system if I use Suse 7.1

Ok, i have cable internet service and a friend showed me a webpage that told how configure Linux to run with @HOME, my provider.

Question will a 10baseT network be fast enough or should I use a 10/100 network?

I am thinking about getting a

Intel Pentium Pro 180 MHz Processor
64 MB RAM Memory
1.2G Hard Drive
Internal 8X CD-ROM Drive
Sound Card
Internal 3.5 Floppy Disk Drive
2 USB Ports
2 Com Ports
1 Ethernet Combo Card (BNC RJ45/ DB15)

I have saw the Light of Linux. Information is Power.

If all you plan to use the Linux box for is a firewall, the computer is plenty fast enough and 10 base cards should be sufficient.

if you plan to use the Linux box for more than a firewall, I would say you need more RAM....especially if you'll be using X a lot until you get used to the command line. X applications usually require more memory than Windows or Mac applications, and X + window manager is huge as far as GUIs go. throw CDE, KDE or Gnome into the picture and it's painfully huge for 64M, with a default install. SuSE is also one of the bigger distros, so I would think that you would want a bigger drive...after swap partition/file and filesystem overhead, it's going to be about 1G of space....my normal desktop installs run about 600M after I get star office and/or WordPerfect....I dunno, 400M would be cutting it close.

pick your sound card wisely.

I am not worried about a sound card in it now anyways. I am not going to install the whole package, just the parts I plan on using for now. I have other hard drives I could put in that. I can get the above system for 99 dollars, that is why I was thinking about getting it for a test machine.

8). hehehe...sounds easy enough, doesn't it?

let me recommend one software package that you should try, it's called webmin and it has a nice web based interface to do alot of your day to day administration from one location.

the system sounds great for what you're planning to do with it....I saw a guy in the overclocking board that says he has a PPro 200 clocked passed 400, you can't beat Intel's high end stuff.
